Sicilian-Family ............................................................................................................... My family in Sicily and America

About

Sicilian-Family.com

WWW Icon This website contains research completed on my Sicilian ancestors. The pedigree includes the following major surnames. Many more names appear on the Search page or in the family group sheets accessible from the pedigree.

ABRUZZO CATANZARO MESSINA
ALFANO INTERRANTE SPOTO

These ancestors have been traced back through records to their homes in Sicily, as far back as about 1715. They come from Santo Stefano Quisquina, San Biagio Platani, and Sciacca, all in the province of Agrigento.

The first ancestors came to the New World in the 1870s. The last to arrive came in the early 1900s. They settled in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, and Illinois. Others remained in Sicily.

Our migration from East Africa thousands of years ago to Sicily has also been traced thanks to DNA research.

The Author

AvatarLike my Sicilian family, I lived most of my life in Chicago.

Soon after finishing college, I read a book about genealogical research. Initially, my research concentrated on my Belgian family. It then extended to my Sicilian family.

Since retirement, I have increased and expanded my research to make use of the Internet.

The Research

ResearchI started my research in 1973. Needless to say, all the research was done either in person or through the mail. And, of course, all of my notes, records, and charts were on paper. This was before the home computer era, let alone the Internet.

In the 1990s, I computerized my records and continued my research using both the old and new methods. And I have enjoyed the help of three cousins: Angela Tallerico Kemker, Terri Harrington Pellegrino, and Fulvio Sabella. I am grateful to them.

You will find Family Records for many families on this website, but I have information on many more. If you think you are related, please contact me. Because of the length of time I spent on research, the different methods used, and the different software programs, you may find some inconsistencies in the data. If you are unsure of my data, please email me, and I will be happy to cite my sources in detail.

The Data

DataWhen viewing this data, I am well aware that there may be inconsistencies. I collected this data over a long period of time. Additionally, a lot of it was collected on paper and later transferred to electronic form, which runs the risk of error.

Some ancestors seemed to be a little less concerned about data accuracy than others. Also, the collection of data by the government was not always neat and tidy. Many first-generation children "Americanized" their names. Apolonia became Eleanor, Concetta became Jean or Jeanette, Francesco became Frank. My grandfather celebrated his birthday on January 1, 1868. In fact, his birth was recorded on January 31, 1867.

Because of all of this, you may find inconsistencies in the data. When I received more accurate information, I tried to go back and correct my original data, but I'm sure I was not always successful. For instance, my grandmother was Accursia Interrante, but she sometimes used Mary; her brother Vincenzo spelled his last name Indoranto and changed his name to James without any legal process. I never suspected we had so many aliases.

So, if you suspect I have it wrong or want to question the accuracy of the information, please email me. My feelings will not be hurt.

If you would like to contact me regarding this research, please email me:
